The NBO came to South Africa in 2015 after local psychologist Katharine Frost heard about the amazing intervention at the WAIMH international congress. Australian-based NBO master trainers Campbell Paul and Susan Nicolson came out to South Africa in May 2015 to train an initial cohort of South African practitioners. They returned to South Africa in May 2017 and March 2019, conducting two additional trainings. Since their initial visit in 2015, two senior staff from the Ububele Educational and Psychotherapy Trust, in Johannesburg, have undergone a mentorship programme in the use of and training in the NBO. In May 2019, this mentorship culminated in the graduation of Nicki Dawson and Katahrine Frost as South Africa’s first local NBO trainers. In March 2020, just one week before COVID-19 quarantine regulations came to South Africa, Katharine Frost and Nicki Dawson conducted their first NBO training at the University of Stellenbosch in Cape Town, with 12 trainees in attendance. Plans are in place for a Johannesburg training, to be held once it is deemed legal to meet in groups again in South Africa.
